how to blog: a guide.

once you sign into blogger, you will automatically be directed to the dashboard. (this is findable again by clicking the "dashboard" link in the top right of the browser.

to create a new post, click on the blue button that reads "NEW POST" in the center of the screen (under "knowing television", which is under "manage blogs"). please do not edit other people's posts.

you'll be directed to the blogger text editor. this is very straightforward. if you'd like to enter only text, you can type it directly into the editor, formatting using the bold, italic, underline, link, &etc. tools above the editor.

if you'd like to add a photo, select the photo tool (to the right of the link tool); you may add a picture from your computer (by uploading it to blogger) or from the internet (by c/p'ing the URL). make sure that once you've added the photo, the layout remains legible. for example:

you can align and adjust the photo you've added by manipulating the menu that appears when you add the picture. the text will automatically roll over on the left and right sides so as not to overlap with the image.

also notice how much better setting a picture into the text looks than leaving a large amount of blank space next to or around the picture. this is a nice way to accent your post without directing attention away from the text itself.

unless you run out of things to say before the end of the picture. oops.

if you'd like to add video to your post, you can do this two ways. if you are uploading from your computer, use the film-clapper tool above to do so. if you'd like to add video from youtube or vimeo, you will need to use the "edit html" tab at the top right of your text editor.

once you click on the "edit html" tab, you should see a lot of text that looks like this:
<i>this is the idiot's guide to how to posting on this blog, written by <a href="http://shorterfasterlouder.blogspot.com/">max suechting</a> in september 2010.</i>
this is html, a common programming language. to add a video (let's say it's this one) to your post, you need the html code from youtube. under the number of views, there's a buttom which reads "<embed>"; once you click that, you should find a text window and several options below it. from those options, select a size (generally smaller videos work better space-wise on blogs), turn off "include related videos", and turn the color scheme to black and white (all the way to the left).

then, click in the text window, use ctrl+a and ctrl+c to select-all and copy the text; go back to the blog's html editor, and use ctrl+v to paste the code into the editor (making sure to leave an empty line both before and after what you've pasted for spacing purposes).

it should look like this:

occasionally you may need to do this process more than once if blogger is having a hard time recognizing the html you've entered.
